The start of a new year means the potential for all new possibilities. We all want to write that next big hit, but sometimes we need to manage our expectations and set realistic goals. Here are a few things to remember for the upcoming year!
Learn as Much as You Can
This goes without saying, but you will never get better without learning new tricks, techniques, etc. Spend some time learning from whatever resources you find most helpful, whether that’s from books, Youtube, or whatever your preferred medium. You may have your go-to producers on Youtube, but try and find someone new, even if it’s not exactly in the same genre. Getting a fresh perspective on things is always helpful and can change your perspective for the better.
Set Realistic Goals
I can’t emphasize how important this is for anyone making music. If you’re a beginner and have maybe 4-5 hours a week to devote to music, don’t expect to make a living from music. Even if you’re already somewhat established, getting to that next level is never easy. I am by no means an expert or even a full-time musician, but I know how to set realistic goals for myself. If you’re a beginner, your goal may be to write a song and finish it. Managing your expectations doesn’t mean you can’t achieve great things, but knowing how much work goes into music will help you understand how to get there.
Make Your Practice Time Intentional
If you only have a few hours a week to spend on music, don’t waste it. Put the phone away and spend that time focused on music. If you find yourself getting distracted then figure out the best ways to stay focused, even if it’s for 10-20 minutes at a time. You’ll find getting better is possible when your time is more focused on your music goals.
Finish Your Projects
This is an important reminder to anyone at any level. You need to finish your projects in order to get better. If you’re never finishing songs, then think about why. Do you need to brush up on mixing, or maybe even learn how to create better melodies. Whatever, the reason, don’t get stuck in the same 8 bar loop and then move on. Learn how to construct songs from start to finish. Here is just one example of how to get out of that cycle.

Remember to Keep it Fun
Music (and art in general) is meant to be fun and creative. If you find yourself getting bored or frustrated by the process then change things up. Maybe take a break, find a different genre, go back to something you enjoy, etc. Don’t make it a chore, make it work for you, whatever that means.
